It’s January 1, 2021 (I probably won’t be finished typing until after midnight so this wont get posted until January 2, 2021) and I have been spending every second of this first day of the year going hard and fast into chores, working out, spending quality family time and trying to find a little time to relax. When I finally sat down after taking down our Christmas decorations and getting our house back to “normal”, I grabbed my trusty Bible (which I am proudly reading in a year again for the third time through) and started in Genesis 1.
Usually, when I start reading the Bible, Genesis is a book I gloss over. I think the reason that I do that is because for so many years, I tried to read through the Bible and would lose momentum super quickly. But, I would always get through Genesis so my heart knows the stores in it. It knows the words and go through the account of the days that God made the heavens and the earth without me having to really give it much thought. This year though, was different. After 2020 and all of the struggles that we went through, I started Genesis and was open to the message that it had to give me.
When I was reading about how God created all of existence, a few short phrases stuck out at me and made me stop to hear what God was teaching me in those moments.
“2. the Spirit of God was hovering [emphasis added] over the surface of the waters”.
-Genesis 1:2 NLT
God’s POTENTIAL hovered over the earth before it was formed. Do you understand how profound that is? Especially when you think about it in terms of us (you and me) as human beings who are made in the image of God. Before we are saved, we are a formless and empty vessel and God’s spirit hovers over us, waiting to be invited in. When we invite Him in, that is where the true beauty and transformations take place.
Like God did with the earth, He designs the fabric of hour hearts and souls to be beautiful masterpieces. The biggest difference between when God made the earth and when he transforms your soul is the fact that He won’t do His work on you, until you give Him permission and resign control. He gives you the choice! Once He knows that you choose Him, He takes your life and makes it more beautiful than you could have ever done on your own. His love penetrates every cell in your body and starts a transformation that is so so good.
“And God saw that it was good.”
-Genesis 1:12 NLT
Another quote that was stated over and over again when talking about the creation of the earth felt like a gut check once I paid attention to the significance in the statements.
“Then God said… And that’s what happened”
-Genesis 1:9 (along with many other following verses that stated this)
If God has spoken something into your life, that is what is going to happen!! His ways are so much higher and so much better than our ways and He knows what he is doing. God had to specifically pick you out and chose to put you into this world at this specific time for a purpose. God SAID that you had to be here.. and that is exactly what happened!
If there have been things in this past year that don’t make sense, lean into God and dive into His Word and see where He can take you on seeing the bigger picture of “why”. Sometimes, the reasoning isn’t something that is revealed to us this side of eternity but I can promise you that if you lean on Him for support, He will be all that you need. Everything that He has said to happen, has happened for a reason- and it is good! He is always going to be enough for me because He is a good, good father.
No matter what you experience in this life friend, please know that God said the world needed you. God put you here for such a time as this, keep chasing after what that calling is!! That is what I’ve been working on getting myself to do as well. I promise I’m not just convicting- I’m actively being convicted and sharing in case others need to hear the same word I have been getting. I am chasing after what God is putting in my heart to do and not letting the little nagging “what if all I do is annoy others” make me afraid to share the message.
